Does the mercury 9.9 2 stroke from 2001 have a cooling jet stream coming off the back? If not, then how is a good way the know if I need to have the impeller changed?

So, I was told that this engine is supose to have a thermostat that only in case of overheating opens and shoots water of the back. Other than that the cooling fluid (lake water) is explelled thru the the same duct as the exaust (smoke) underwater.
the engine hasn't siezed yet. =)
